CME Group exchanges (CME, CBOT, NYMEX, COMEX)

CME Group operates four designated contract markets, CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX, and every futures product is listed on exactly one of them: ES and NQ on CME, YM, Treasuries and grains on CBOT, energy on NYMEX, gold and silver on COMEX. The listing exchange is part of the instrument's identity for data subscriptions and routing.

Four exchanges, one platform

The CFTC glossary defines a designated contract market as a board of trade or exchange designated by the CFTC to trade futures, swaps and/or options. CME Group owns four of them. They share the CME Globex electronic platform and CME Clearing, but each keeps its own rulebook and product list, and market data is organised and often licensed by exchange.

Why the exchange matters

  • Subscriptions: a data request names the symbol and its exchange. GCQ6 requested on CME is not an expensive contract, it is a non-existent one, because gold is listed on COMEX.
  • Entitlements: data permissions are commonly granted per exchange, so a login entitled to CME may still lack NYMEX or COMEX.
  • Rules: trading hours, limits and settlement procedures are set in each exchange's rulebook for its products.

In Senzoukria

Each root in the catalogue carries its exchange, and a typed symbol is resolved to that exchange before a book subscription is made. The source explains why: an impossible subscription shows up as a silent book that a retry loop makes indistinguishable from a session that is not ready yet. When a symbol cannot be resolved, the caller has to say so instead of subscribing anyway. Cached bars are keyed with the exchange too, for example MNQM6.CME or GCZ6.COMEX.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every CME Group product is on 'CME' in a data request.
  • Reading an empty heatmap on a metals or energy contract as a quiet market when the exchange field is wrong.
  • Believing a CME data entitlement covers all four exchanges.

Frequently asked questions

Why is YM on CBOT when ES is on CME?
The Dow-based contracts were developed on the Chicago Board of Trade before it became part of CME Group, and products remain listed on the exchange where they were established. The trading platform is the same; the listing exchange differs.
Do I need separate data for NYMEX and COMEX?
Often yes. Data permissions and fees are commonly organised by exchange, so check with your provider which of CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX your login covers.
