Volume climax

A volume climax is a bar whose traded volume is extreme relative to the bars that precede it, usually measured as a number of standard deviations above the recent mean. On its own it is a statistical flag; it becomes a stopping-volume or exhaustion reading only when the bar sits at the end of a move and price fails to continue.

How the flag is computed

The usual test compares the current bar's volume with the mean and standard deviation of the N bars strictly before it, and fires when the volume exceeds the mean by k standard deviations. Senzoukria's Climax bars adds a second condition on the bar's range (high minus low, in price units), so that a bar must be both unusually busy and unusually wide. The two tests use strict inequalities: with a flat baseline where the deviation is zero, only a genuine excess over the mean can trigger.

  • The baseline uses the preceding bars only, so the current bar does not inflate its own reference.
  • Population statistics are used, dividing by N rather than N − 1, which is stated in the formula rather than left implicit.
  • Range is scale-free, so no tick size is needed for the test.

Reading a climax

  • At the end of a move: a candidate for stopping volume, to be confirmed by the following bars stalling.
  • In the middle of a range: often a news print, a roll or a large single execution; the footprint cells tell which.
  • Combined with delta divergence, such as a new high on a bar whose delta is weaker than previous highs, it is the exhaustion pattern the footprint trading hub describes.
  • On volume bars, the volume test is meaningless because every bar has the same size; the range condition still carries information.

Climax bars is an overlay in the Tape & flow group with Period (default 20), Threshold in sigma (default 2) and a colour. The marker is a dot at the bar's high. Because the flag depends on the N preceding bars, the first N bars of a loaded series produce no marker rather than a marker computed on a short baseline. Related pane indicators, Volume Z-Score and Relative Volume, show the same excess as a continuous line without the range condition, which helps separate a busy-but-narrow bar from a true climax.

Common mistakes

  • Trading the flag as a reversal. It marks an extreme; the reaction is read on later bars.
  • Comparing climaxes across sessions with different volume regimes, such as the open and the overnight, with one fixed baseline.
  • Forgetting that a lower sigma threshold produces more flags, not more information.
  • Reading a climax on a stitched continuous contract around the roll, where two books are glued together.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Climax bars require range as well as volume?
Because a bar can be busy without going anywhere. Heavy volume in a narrow range is closer to absorption than to a climax, and a wide range on ordinary volume is just a fast bar. Requiring both extremes at once isolates the case where effort and result were both unusual, which is what the term climax usually means in the effort-versus-result reading.
What period should the baseline use?
The default is 20 preceding bars, which is a common choice for a rolling statistic. There is no correct value; a shorter baseline reacts faster and flags more, a longer one is steadier and misses short bursts. Whatever value is chosen, keep it fixed within a sample so that flags from different days are comparable.
