Chart template (preset)

A chart template is a saved set of chart settings, such as colours, mounted indicators, crosshair and element visibility, that can be applied to a chart in one action. A preset is a template shipped with the software; a saved template is one the user captured from a chart they configured.

Template versus preset

  • A preset is a ready-made configuration bundled with the application and usually cannot be edited in place.
  • A saved template is a named snapshot of the current chart style, created by the user.
  • Both are applied, not merged: the fields a template contains overwrite the chart's current values; fields it does not contain stay as they are.
  • A template never changes the data source, the contract or the subscription; it changes how what is already loaded is drawn.

What belongs in a template

The useful test is whether a setting describes the picture or the data. Colours, cell type, indicator list, crosshair, label visibility and font sizes describe the picture and travel well between sessions. Tick grouping per row, session anchor and bar type describe how the data is aggregated; changing them alters computed values such as the point of control, so they deserve a deliberate decision each time rather than a silent switch inside a style.

The footprint settings have a Templates tab. Chart templates save the current chart style (colours, indicators, crosshair, visibility) under a name, and any saved template can be applied with one click; the hint gives switching between a screen-share palette and a working palette as the typical use. Each saved entry has apply and delete actions, and the list reads No saved templates yet before the first capture.

The heatmap settings have a separate Presets section. Its note states the scope explicitly: a preset only touches what it claims, colours and ladder settings stay yours. The tour opens the footprint settings on the Templates tab and describes the ready-made chart themes as applying in one click.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a template to restore a contract, timeframe or data connection.
  • Sharing a template between instruments with different tick sizes without rechecking the ticks-per-row setting.
  • Deleting the only template that held a carefully tuned indicator list, with no exported copy.
  • Assuming a preset applied on the heatmap also changed the footprint; the two screens keep separate settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying a template change my indicators' parameters?
A saved chart template captures the indicator list and the chart style at the time of capture. Applying it replaces the current indicator set with the saved one, so parameters return to what they were when the template was saved. Save a new template after retuning if that state should be kept.
Can a template change the tick grouping or session of the chart?
Template scope is limited to style: colours, indicators, crosshair and visibility. Aggregation settings such as ticks per row and the session anchor are chart configuration, and changing them changes computed values, so they are set separately and deliberately.
