Heatmap presets and auto setup

Heatmap presets are ready-made rendering configurations for a liquidity heatmap, and auto setup is a routine that derives the display thresholds, such as the big-trade filter, the noise floor and the visible price height, from the trades and book levels actually received for a pair. Presets fix the look; auto setup fits the thresholds to the instrument.

Why thresholds cannot be shared between instruments

A resting order of 50 contracts is a wall on one contract and background noise on another. A big-trade marker at a fixed size flags every print on an active micro contract and nothing on a thin one. The same is true of the visible price height: an index future moves through more ticks in five minutes than a bond future. Any setting expressed in absolute contracts or ticks therefore has to be chosen per instrument, and a routine that reads recent activity is one way to get a defensible starting value.

The heatmap settings are organised in sections: Rendering, Liquidity, Trades, Markers, DOM ladder and Presets. The Presets note states that a preset only touches what it claims: colours and ladder settings stay yours. Rendering offers a Theme, a Style with Flat, Neon, 3D, Glass, Ring and Buy/sell dot styles, a Colour mode and Vertical smoothing.

Auto setup for this pair has a Tune button. Its hint describes what it does: it sets the Big Trades filter to the top 2% of recent trades, the noise floor and the DOM big order threshold from the book, and the visible price height from the last 5 minutes of volatility. When it completes, the screen reports the number of trades and book levels it used; when there is not enough live data, it says to wait for trades and the book rather than applying guessed values.

Common mistakes

  • Running auto setup on a quiet overnight sample and keeping the thresholds through the open.
  • Expecting a preset to change thresholds; it changes the look.
  • Comparing wall sizes between two pairs tuned separately as if the scale were shared.
  • Lowering the noise floor to zero and reading retail-size levels as liquidity structure.

Frequently asked questions

What does auto setup change on the heatmap?
Four thresholds: the Big Trades filter, set at the top 2% of recent trades; the noise floor and the DOM big-order threshold, read from the book; and the visible price height, from the last five minutes of volatility. It does not touch the theme, colours or ladder columns, and it declines to run until enough trades and book levels have arrived.
Should I rerun auto setup during the session?
The values reflect the sample seen when Tune was pressed. Activity at the open differs from midday, so rerunning after a regime change gives thresholds that match the current tape. Note the values before and after, so that a marker that appeared or disappeared can be attributed to the threshold and not to the market.
