High volume node (HVN)

A high volume node (HVN) is a price zone in a volume profile where traded volume is markedly higher than at the surrounding levels. It shows a range the market accepted and rotated in, and it tends to slow price down when revisited.

Definition

Look at a volume profile from the side: the histogram has bulges and notches. A bulge, a group of adjacent price levels with much more volume than their neighbours, is a high volume node. The POC is the tallest single level, but an HVN is a zone, often several ticks wide, and a profile can contain several of them. Its opposite is the low volume node (LVN), the thin notch.

  • An HVN is defined relative to the profile it belongs to; there is no absolute volume threshold.
  • The wider and taller the bulge, the longer the market spent there and the more contracts changed hands at those prices.
  • A double-distribution profile has two HVNs separated by an LVN.

Behaviour at the level

  • When price returns to an HVN, it often decelerates: both sides previously found the zone acceptable, so orders are waiting and rotation resumes.
  • Inside an HVN, direction is harder to read; many traders wait for price to leave the zone rather than trade inside it.
  • An HVN left behind by a fast move is a common destination for a later rotation, in the same way a naked POC is.
  • On the heatmap, a resting-liquidity band that coincides with an HVN adds a second, independent reading of the same zone.

On the heatmap screen, the 'Volume profile' panel plots the histogram next to the liquidity map.

Common mistakes

  • Reading an HVN as a barrier. It is a zone of agreement, which slows price, not a wall that reverses it.
  • Comparing HVNs across instruments or periods by raw volume; only the relative shape inside one profile is meaningful.
  • Confusing a large single bar's volume with an HVN; the node is a property of the price axis, not the time axis.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a high volume node?
There is no fixed width. An HVN spans the adjacent levels whose volume stands out from their neighbours in that profile, from a few ticks on a quiet session to a wide band on a rotational day. Detection tools use a relative contrast, which is why the shading in Senzoukria varies with how pronounced the node is.
Is the POC always inside an HVN?
In practice yes, since the POC is the single busiest level and the levels around it usually carry heavy volume too, so it sits inside a high volume node. A narrow spike of volume at one price with thin neighbours is the exception: the POC is then a peak rather than a zone. The reverse is not true either: a profile can have secondary HVNs that do not contain the POC.
Do HVNs work on crypto profiles?
The concept is the same on any market with volume at price. In Senzoukria, crypto charts use real Binance volume at price, so HVN shading is available on those profiles. Crypto in the software is analysis only; there is no crypto order routing.
