Initiative activity
Initiative activity is aggressive trading that moves price away from an accepted value area and is confirmed by volume at the new prices, as opposed to responsive activity that fades a move back toward value. On a footprint it prints as stacked imbalances in the direction of travel; on a volume profile it shows as acceptance outside the previous value area.

Initiative in auction market terms
The volume profile guide describes the value area as the band of prices the market agreed on and the point of control as its centre. Activity that trades within that band and rotates back to the middle is responsive: participants are reacting to prices they consider unfair. Activity that pushes price out of the band and keeps trading there is initiative: participants are willing to pay the spread repeatedly to establish new prices, and the market is searching for a new value area.
The confirmation is acceptance. A poke outside the value area that trades real volume and holds is initiative; a one-tick spike that is rejected back in is not. The old value area high or low then tends to be watched as a reference from the other side.
How it prints on a footprint
- Several imbalances in a row on the same side, the stacked imbalances that the footprint trading hub calls initiative: someone is paying up repeatedly to get positioned.
- Delta building progressively in the direction of the move rather than flipping sign.
- The heaviest volume in the middle or lower part of an up bar, with light volume into the close, which reads as little resistance ahead.
- Cumulative delta rising with price rather than diverging from it.
In Senzoukria
There is no single indicator named initiative. The reading is assembled from the footprint's imbalance highlighting, the Stacked Imbalances and Stacked Imbalance overlays, and the session profile with its developing point of control and value area (Session POC (developing) and Session VAH/VAL (developing) in the Profiles & levels group, both reset at each CME session open). The Opening Drive overlay in the Structure & sessions group is one retrospective form of initiative: it marks a session whose first M bars (default 3) all have bodies in the same direction and a higher average volume than the whole loaded session. Its indicator note states that later bars can create or remove the marker and that it is a description after the fact, not a signal confirmed at the marker's timestamp.
Common mistakes
- Calling a spike outside value initiative before any volume has traded there.
- Reading initiative on a stitched continuous contract around the roll, where the value area belongs to two different books.
- Confusing initiative with a short squeeze that reverses within the same session; both start as aggressive buying, only one builds value.
- Assuming initiative on the open will continue; the opening drive marker is retrospective for exactly this reason.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I tell initiative from a false breakout?
- By acceptance. Initiative trades volume at the new prices and holds outside the previous value area, so the developing profile starts to build there. A false breakout pokes out, trades little, and returns inside value. On the footprint, initiative shows stacked imbalances in the breakout direction with delta that keeps building; a false breakout shows thin cells at the extreme and delta that fails to confirm.
- Is an opening drive the same as initiative activity?
- An opening drive is one specific case: initiative from the first bars of the session, with all bodies in one direction and above-average volume. Senzoukria's Opening Drive marker detects it after the session has enough bars, which is why the app labels it retrospective. Initiative activity in general can start at any time and at any level, not only at the open.
