Responsive activity

Responsive activity is trading that reacts to price reaching the edge of an accepted value area and pushes it back toward the point of control, as opposed to initiative activity that drives price away from value. It is the behaviour of a balanced market, and on a footprint it often appears as aggression being absorbed at the value area edges.

Definition

The volume profile guide describes a balanced market as one rotating inside its value area, where the value area low acts as support, the value area high as resistance and the point of control as the mean. Responsive buying appears when price reaches the lower edge and buyers who consider that price low step in; responsive selling appears at the upper edge. The word responsive captures that the participants are reacting to a price they see as unfair rather than initiating a move to find a new one.

How it appears in the order flow

  • Absorption at the value area edge: aggressive sellers hit the low, price holds, the cells show heavy bid volume without the bar extending.
  • A delta divergence at the edge: the bar closes back inside value while its delta pointed outward.
  • High volume per tick of range near the edge, which is the shape the passive absorption reading measures.
  • A rotation back toward the point of control on the following bars, which is the part that makes the earlier absorption responsive.

In Senzoukria

Responsive activity is read from the session profile and the absorption tools together rather than from one dedicated indicator. The profile side is Session VAH/VAL (developing) and Session POC (developing) in the Profiles & levels group, which draw the value area edges as the session builds from the CME session open. The absorption side is Passive Absorption in the Tape & flow group, whose note describes it as the sum of level volume divided by the distance in ticks between the lowest and highest traded levels, a heuristic that does not prove passive replenishment or iceberg orders. Absorption Markers and Absorption Score show the same fact per level and per bar. Value Area Position %, in the Volume group, is a per-bar reading: it places each bar's close relative to that bar's own value area, not the session's, and emits no point when the bar's value area has no width.

Common mistakes

  • Fading a value area edge without checking that the market is still balanced; once initiative accepts price outside, the edge flips role.
  • Reading a single absorbed bar as responsive activity before the rotation back has started.
  • Using yesterday's value area on a session that has already built a new one.
  • Ignoring the session definition; a value area computed on a different session anchor puts the edges in different places.

Frequently asked questions

Is responsive activity bullish or bearish?
It is both, depending on the edge. Responsive buying at the value area low is bullish for a return to the point of control; responsive selling at the value area high is bearish for the same reason. What it is not is a trend call: responsive activity is the behaviour of a market staying in balance, so it argues for rotation rather than for a directional move.
How does absorption relate to responsive activity?
Absorption is the mechanism that makes responsive activity visible on a footprint. When price reaches the edge of value and aggressive orders push at it, responsive participants take the other side with passive orders, and the footprint records heavy volume with little price progress. The absorption confirms that someone defended the edge; the rotation back toward the point of control on later bars confirms that the defence was responsive rather than a pause before continuation.
