Pan, zoom and wheel anchor
The footprint chart zooms time with the wheel, zooms price with Shift + wheel, pans with a free drag and zooms either axis by dragging its axis, with a “Wheel zoom anchor” setting that decides whether the wheel pivots under the cursor or on the live candle.

What it does
Navigation is a small state machine driven by mouse and wheel events. A plain wheel or a trackpad swipe zooms the time axis, pivoting where the “Wheel zoom anchor” setting says; Ctrl (⌘ on macOS) + wheel, or a pinch gesture, forces the pivot under the cursor whatever that setting is; Shift + wheel zooms the price axis around the cursor. Dragging on the chart body pans freely in both directions; dragging on the price axis (right edge) zooms the price scale, up to zoom in; dragging on the time axis (bottom strip) zooms the time scale, right to zoom in. A drag starts after 3 px of movement so clicks are not mistaken for pans.
Zoom factors are continuous rather than stepped: one standard wheel notch (100 units of delta) changes the scale by about 8%, and a small trackpad delta gives a proportionally smaller change, so mechanical wheels and trackpads feel the same. The column width is clamped between 2 and 1200 px and the row height between 1 and 300 px. Below a certain column width the renderer stops printing the numbers in the cells and falls back to colour only, which is how the chart can be zoomed out to hundreds of bars.
When you have not panned horizontally, the chart auto-follows the live bar; when you have not zoomed vertically, the price scale auto-fits the visible candles around the last price. Panning back to the live edge re-enables auto-follow on its own, without a button.

How to use it
Scroll to change how many bars fit on screen, hold Shift and scroll to spread or compress the price levels, and drag the chart body to move through the session. If the footprint numbers disappear, zoom in until the columns are wide enough for text again. Traders coming from ATAS or Sierra Chart can set “Wheel zoom anchor” to “Right edge (live candle)” in Footprint settings → Visual Settings so the newest candle never moves while zooming.
In a linked workspace group with Zoom / pan synchronised, a wheel event or a mouse-up on one pane publishes its visible time span and price range to the other panes of the group.
Limits or pitfalls
- Panning left goes past the oldest loaded bar into empty space; it does not load more history. How far back the chart reaches is the History range setting, not a navigation gesture.
- Panning right past the live bar is capped: the newest bar can slide at most about 30% in from the left edge, so it can never be pushed off screen.
- When the cursor is over the CVD panel, the wheel zooms that panel’s own vertical scale instead of the chart; double-clicking the panel resets it.
- The + and − buttons keep the cell aspect ratio; the wheel zooms one axis at a time.

- Why does zooming out move the chart toward history?
- With the anchor set to “Under the cursor”, the bar under the mouse stays fixed and both sides expand. Choose “Right edge (live candle)” in Footprint settings → Visual Settings to keep the last bar on the right and reveal history to the left only.
- How do I get back to the live candle?
- Drag the chart back to the right edge: auto-follow resumes on its own once the viewport reaches the live position. On the Binance and Databento chart the ⟲ Reset view button does it in one click and also restores the default scale.
- Why have the numbers in the cells disappeared?
- Below a minimum column width the renderer switches to colour-only cells. Zoom in with the wheel, or with Ctrl + wheel over the columns you want to read, until they are wide enough for text.
- How do I scroll through time without changing the zoom?
- Drag the chart body. The wheel is bound to zoom, not to time scrolling, so a plain wheel always changes the scale.
