Chart workspace: panes, layouts and linked groups
The Footprint workspace splits the chart page into one to four panes, each with its own data source, symbol and timeframe, and lets panes in the same group share a crosshair, symbol, timeframe or zoom.

What it does
The workspace is the page that hosts the footprint chart. It is made of pages (also called windows once detached) and panes. A page holds one to four panes arranged by a layout; each pane is an independent chart with its own source (Rithmic, Binance Spot, Binance Perp, Databento CME, NinjaTrader or Quantower), its own symbol, exchange and timeframe. Every pane runs in its own frame with a separate settings and drawings store, so an indicator added on one chart does not appear on the others. When a pane is created, it starts from a snapshot of the originating pane’s settings and drawings and then diverges.
The “Charts ▾” menu in the toolbar shows the selected pane, the five layouts and the link controls. Clicking a chart selects it; the chart strip in the menu can also be dragged to reorder panes. In the Two columns, Three charts and Four charts layouts a vertical divider adjusts the column split; in Two rows, Three and Four a horizontal divider adjusts the row split. Both dividers are draggable and respond to the arrow keys in 2% steps, and both are clamped between 20% and 80%.
The layout, split ratios, pane definitions and link settings are persisted locally (key orderflow.footprint.workspace.v1). A corrupted or invalid stored workspace is discarded and replaced by a single pane on the preferred data source.

How to use it
Open the Footprint page, click “Charts ▾” and pick a layout. Select a pane by clicking it, then change its source with the source selector next to the menu and pick a symbol from the chart’s symbol picker. To compare two contracts, keep both panes in group A and leave Crosshair on Linked by group: the time line follows across panes even when the symbols differ. To watch the same contract on two timeframes, enable Zoom / pan too; to follow a single contract everywhere, enable Symbol.
Panes can be moved between pages with the “Move chart to” selector, and a selected pane can be detached into its own window (see the detached windows page). Renaming and closing pages happens in the “Saved windows and layouts” section, where a page name is limited to 48 characters.
Limits or pitfalls
- Links only work inside a group: an Ungrouped pane never sends or receives a crosshair.
- The horizontal price line of a synchronized crosshair is drawn only when symbol and source match; across different contracts you get the time line alone.
- Symbol synchronization is skipped between a crypto pane (Binance Spot or Perp) and a futures pane, and on a futures pane the incoming symbol is applied only if it resolves to a known contract. Bridge panes choose their instrument upstream, so they ignore a linked symbol.
- A workspace can hold at most 16 pages and 4 panes per page; the New window and Detach buttons are disabled at the limit.
- Subscriptions are shared by symbol: several panes on the same contract use one feed, and closing one pane never tears down another pane’s feed. Four panes on four different contracts still mean four subscriptions.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does the crosshair from another pane show only a vertical line?
- The vertical line is the shared time. The horizontal price line is only drawn when the two panes show the same symbol on the same source; otherwise a price level from one contract would be meaningless on the other.
- Do panes share indicators and drawings?
- No. A new pane starts from a copy of the settings and drawings of the pane it was cloned from, then keeps its own store. Changing an indicator in one pane does not affect the others.
- How do I stop panes from following each other?
- Use “Unlink all” in the Charts menu, or set the selected pane’s group to Ungrouped. You can also switch individual links (crosshair, symbol, timeframe, zoom / pan) to Independent.
