Keyword alerts: ring once when a headline names your word

Keyword alerts watch the incoming headlines for words you list. Each matching headline rings once, on the wire refresh, on this machine only — there is no server, no account and no push.

What it does

You type a list of words and commit it by pressing Enter or by clicking away from the field. Every time the wire is refreshed, the headline and the summary of each new article are checked against that list. A headline that matches produces one entry showing the keyword that matched, the headline itself and the source. Clicking the entry opens the article in the system browser.

Matching is per article, not per refresh: the identifiers of the headlines already signalled are remembered, so the same story does not ring again on the next poll. Enough identifiers are kept for a wire of several dozen articles refreshing continuously, and the list of alerts on screen is capped so it stays readable — the panel shows the twelve most recent.

How to use it

  • Keep the list short and specific. A word like "market" will match most of the wire; "fomc" or a ticker will not.
  • Add the words that would change your plan rather than the ones that merely interest you — the panel is a tripwire, not a topic filter. Use the wire's tags for topics.
  • Empty the keyword field at the end of the session if you leave the application open, so the next morning does not start with yesterday's tripwires.
  • An alert is a headline, not a fill and not a signal. Read the article before acting on it.

Limits and pitfalls

  • Alerts are local to the machine. They do not follow you to another computer, and nothing is sent to a server.
  • They only fire while the News terminal is fetching. If the application is closed, or the source is rate-limited, nothing is watched during that time.
  • The wire itself is delayed by roughly fifteen minutes, so an alert is never a real-time notification.
  • Matching is textual: a story about a company that never names it in the headline or summary will not ring.

Frequently asked questions

Will the same headline ring twice?
No. The identifiers of headlines already signalled are remembered, so a story rings once even though it stays in the wire across several refreshes.
Do alerts work when the application is closed?
No. They are evaluated on the wire refresh inside the running application, on that machine only.
Does clearing the alerts also clear my keywords?
No. Clear all empties the list of fired alerts; the watched words stay in the field until you change them.
