News wire and tags: search, topical tags and symbol presets

The Wire is the headline panel of the News terminal: a dense list of stories from the reference sources, a full-text search over the last seven days, twelve topical tags and fourteen symbol presets that switch those tags on in one click.

What it does

The Wire lists headlines newest first, one per line: age, source, headline, and up to three tags. There are no thumbnails — the panel is built to be read, not looked at. A headline published less than thirty minutes ago is highlighted. Clicking a row opens the article in the system browser, never inside the application window.

Every article is classified on arrival by matching regular expressions against the headline plus the summary. Twelve tags exist: US, EU, CHINA, FED, ECB, MACRO, TECH, ENERGY, INDICES, CRYPTO, EARNINGS and GEOPOLITICS. An article can carry none, one or several.

The header states the freshness of the harvest. When the source refuses a refresh but articles are already loaded, the panel keeps the last good batch and says so — "Last good feed, {age} ago — source is refusing right now" — rather than presenting stale rows as fresh. A transient polling failure never blanks the list.

Symbol presets

Fourteen presets are listed by category — Index Futures, Energy, Metals, Forex, Rates and Crypto. A category holding no preset is not drawn at all. The keys are MNQ, MES, M2K, MYM, CL, NG, 6E, 6J, 6B, DX, GC, SI, ZN and BTC. MNQ, for example, turns on US, FED, MACRO, TECH and INDICES; MES adds ENERGY on top of those.

Limits and pitfalls

  • Tagging is heuristic. The rules match words in the headline and summary, so a story that never names its subject explicitly can arrive untagged, and an unrelated article can pick up a tag by coincidence.
  • Tag filters do not apply to search results — a search returns what the source returned.
  • The feed is a free public source: it is rate-limited, and the panel will say so and retry rather than hide the gap.
  • Nothing in the wire is advice, and a headline is not a trade signal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an article show no tag?
Tags come from regular expressions run against the headline and the summary. If neither text contains one of the matched terms, the article carries no tag. It is still listed — only tag filtering will hide it.
Does selecting a preset also change the economic calendar?
No. A preset writes tags for the wire and sets the active instrument used by the session-movers panel. The calendar keeps its own range, impact and country filters.
How far back does the search go?
Seven days, as the placeholder states. Older material is not queried.
