Selection volume profile drawing: profile over any range of bars

The Profile tool draws a volume, bid/ask or delta profile over any rectangle of bars and prices you select, with POC and value area, a statistics box and seven drawing styles.

What it does

The Profile tool is a drawing, so it lives with the other line drawings, is stored per symbol and can be moved, locked, deleted and undone like a rectangle. Its frame is a time range and a price range; inside it, the bars that fall in the range are aggregated level by level into a horizontal histogram. The tooltip of the toolbar button says it plainly: volume, delta, POC and value area over any range.

The selection can be hit anywhere on its frame or on one of its bars (with a 6 px tolerance), which is how a click selects it and opens the properties panel.

How to use it

  • Arm Profile in the toolbar, press on the first bar and drag to the last bar and price extent you want. Release: the profile is computed and the properties panel opens.
  • Read the stats box: the number of bars in the selection, the total volume, the delta, then POC and the value area low–high (VA … – …).
  • Switch Type to Δ or Δ% to see where the aggression concentrated, or A/B to compare the two sides at each level. Δ+V shows the delta bar centred over the volume bar.
  • Use Rows when the price range is wide: grouping several ticks per row keeps the histogram readable, and a row is never finer than one price step.

Limits and pitfalls

  • The profile aggregates the bars loaded on the chart. Bars outside the loaded history contribute nothing, so a selection that reaches before the first loaded bar is a partial profile.
  • Row grouping changes the POC: a coarser row can move it to a neighbouring level. Compare with the same row size when comparing two selections.
  • The frame is normalised (top above bottom, start before end) whichever way you drag, so a drag from right to left is valid.
  • A profile drawing is per symbol and per chart; it is not shared with the session volume profile indicator, which has its own settings.

Frequently asked questions

How is the selection profile different from the ruler?
The ruler gives price, time, ticks, volume and delta between two points on one line. The profile spreads the same range across price levels, adds POC and value area and lets you choose delta, bid/ask or volume per row.
Why are there so few rows on a wide selection?
Auto keeps every row at least 3 px tall, so on a large price range rows are grouped. Choose a tick count or a row count in the Rows field to force a finer or coarser grid.
Can I style the profile like an indicator?
Yes. Seven draw styles, four colours and two opacities are available in the panel and in the Advanced settings modal. The style preset menu does not cover profile drawings, so each profile is styled on its own.
