Trade date (CME trading day)

The trade date is the business day to which the exchange assigns a futures trade. On CME Globex a trading day starts at the 17:00 Chicago reopen on the previous calendar day and ends at the next afternoon's close, so a trade at 18:30 Chicago time on Sunday belongs to Monday's trade date and settles with Monday.

Definition

Futures exchanges settle, report and clear by trade date. Because Globex reopens at 17:00 Chicago time after the daily break, the trades from that evening onward are part of the next business day's session: they are settled with that day's settlement price and appear on that day's statement.

Worked example

  • Sunday 18:30 CT: trade date Monday.
  • Monday 10:00 CT: trade date Monday.
  • Monday 17:15 CT, after the reopen: trade date Tuesday.
  • Midnight UTC falls at 18:00 CT in winter (CST, UTC-6) and 19:00 CT in summer (CDT, UTC-5): one to two hours into the new trading day, so a UTC day boundary cuts a session in two.

Why it matters for order flow tools

Session-based calculations, such as a session VWAP, a session cumulative delta, a daily volume profile or daily high and low, must use the same boundary as the exchange, or their values will not match reference platforms. Daily statistics from the exchange, including settlement, volume and open interest, are all organised by trade date.

In Senzoukria

Charts group bars by CME trading day using the Chicago time zone from the system's time-zone database, with 17:00 as the boundary; the session key is the calendar date on which the session opened, so Sunday evening's trades are keyed with the session that opened on Sunday. The prop-firm demo simulation keys its days by the date on which the session settles, so the same trades fall under Monday. Both group identical trades; only the label differs by one day, which is worth knowing when comparing a chart's session with a statement.

Common mistakes

  • Using midnight in any time zone as the session boundary for futures.
  • Comparing a daily total computed by calendar date with the exchange's trade-date figure.
  • Forgetting the one-hour shift of UTC offsets at daylight-saving changes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Sunday evening count as Monday?
Because the session that opens at 17:00 Chicago time on Sunday closes on Monday afternoon, and the exchange assigns the whole session to the day on which it closes and settles.
Why does my platform's daily bar differ from another's?
One platform may cut days at midnight in some time zone while the other uses the exchange's 17:00 Chicago boundary. The same trades then fall into different daily bars.
